Mobile Mechanic Insurance Guide

Everything you need to know about coverage types, costs, state requirements, and how to save.

Why Insurance Matters

Insurance isn't optional for mobile mechanics — it's the foundation of a professional operation. One accident, one damaged customer vehicle, or one liability claim without coverage could wipe out your entire business. Proper insurance protects you, your tools, your customers' vehicles, and your livelihood.

Beyond risk protection, many fleet clients and commercial customers require proof of insurance before they'll work with you. Having proper coverage is a competitive advantage.

Coverage Types You Need

General Liability (GL)

Covers third-party bodily injury and property damage. If you accidentally damage a customer's driveway, or a customer trips over your equipment, GL covers it. Standard policies range from $500K to $2M in coverage.

Typical cost: $500 – $1,500/year depending on coverage limits and state.

Garage Keepers Liability

This is the most important and most misunderstood coverage for mobile mechanics. Garage Keepers covers damage to vehicles in your care, custody, and control. If you accidentally drop a tool on a customer's hood, or their car rolls off your jack, this policy pays for the repair.

Typical cost: $300 – $800/year. Coverage limits typically $50K – $100K per occurrence.

Commercial Auto Insurance

Your personal auto insurance will NOT cover you when driving for business purposes. You need commercial auto insurance for your service van or truck. This covers accidents, damage, and liability while driving to and from jobs.

Typical cost: $1,200 – $2,500/year depending on vehicle, driving history, and state.

Tools & Equipment Coverage

Also called "inland marine" insurance. Covers your tools and equipment against theft, fire, and damage — whether they're in your van, at a job site, or in storage. Given that most mobile mechanics carry $10K-$50K+ in tools, this is essential.

Typical cost: $200 – $500/year for $25K-$50K coverage.

Workers Compensation

Required if you have employees (in most states). Even as a sole operator, some states require workers comp. Check your state's requirements.

State-by-State Requirements

Insurance requirements vary significantly by state. Some key variations:

  • California: Requires a Motor Vehicle Repair Dealer (MRVD) license, which mandates liability insurance.
  • Texas: No state mechanic license required, but cities may require business licenses with insurance proof.
  • Florida: Motor Vehicle Repair registration required. Liability insurance recommended but not always mandated.
  • New York: Motor Vehicle Repair registration with the DMV. Insurance requirements vary by county.
